MORGANTOWN, WV (WOWK) — WOWK and Nexstar stations won big at the 2024 West Virginia Broadcasters Association Excellence in Broadcasting Awards in Morgantown Saturday night.

The crew at WOWK 13 News won nine awards on Saturday, including the night’s biggest for a TV station: Station of the Year.

Here are the other awards the station came home with:

  • Best Sports Anchor in a Large Market – Cassidy Wood
  • Best Long-Form Program in a Large Market – “Inside West Virginia Politics”
  • Best Coverage of Breaking News – “Regal Apartment Fire,” Amanda Barren
  • Best News Photographer in a Large Market – Elbert Mosley
  • Best AM Television Newscast in a Large Market
  • Best Locally Produced News Show in a Large Market – “Tragedy to Triumph”
  • Best Multimedia Journalist (MMJ) in a Large Market – Rachel Pellegrino
  • Best Emerging Journalist – Rachel Pellegrino

“We’re very blessed, every single one of us,” 13 News Evening Anchor Amanda Barren said at Sunday night’s ceremony. “But what I think is most important is that we just really meet some very special people along the way, and I know I have in so many different ways.”

“It’s been a great privilege and an honor of mine to come here and lead this great group of people, and I thank you all very much for your efforts,” News Director Bob Schaper said.”

“I want to thank all the people that have gave me the opportunity to tell their stories. I’ve met amazing people, obviously, at the office and also in the field,” Weekend Anchor Rachel Pellegrino said.”

Nexstar, who owns stations across the Mountain State, also won big, with WVNS — who serves the Beckley viewing area — winning six, and WBOY — who serves the Morgantown and Clarksburg viewing area — winning two.
