Top Chinese American Group Blasts “Racist Slurs” By Trump About His Former Transportation Secretary

The Committee of 100, a grouping of successful Chinese Americans ranging from billionaire entrepreneurs to research scientists, on Monday blasted “racist slurs” by former U.S. President Donald Trump about his one-time Cabinet official Elaine Chao.

“The racist slurs and hate that former U.S. President Donald Trump directed against former U.S. Secretary of Labor and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao was deplorable, disgusting, and inexcusable,” said Committee of 100 President Zhengyu Huang in a statement.

According to CNN, Trump in a Friday night post on his social media platform Truth Social ridiculed Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Chao, the Kentucky Republican’s wife, and described her as the senator’s “China loving wife, Coco Chow!”

“This type of language only contributes to the vicious cycle of hatred, bigotry and violence directed at Chinese Americans and the AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) community,” Huang said. “An attack on Asian Americans, be it verbal or physical, is an attack on all Americans. We cannot sit idly by and allow racially charged language to go unchecked.”

A two-term labor secretary under George W. Bush, Taiwan-born Chao was transportation secretary for Trump from 2017 until she resigned after the Jan. 6 insurrection in Washington last year. She faced controversy over her U.S. government role and ties between her family’s New York-headquartered shipping company, the Foremost Group, and China.

Current Committee of 100 members that appeared on the 2022 Forbes Billionaires List unveiled this month include Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing’s former chairman and CEO Morris Chang, Far Eastern Group Chairman Douglas Hsu, Golden Eagle International Group Chairman Roger Wang, Fortinet CEO Ken Xie, Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, and Eric Yuan, the founder and CEO of Zoom.
