When Ammar al Ameri got the information that he was nominated for a GCC-wide photography competition, he said that he felt honoured to have been given such an opportunity.

Al Ameri recently returned home after securing second place in the Artistic Radiance competition held at the University of Sharjah. This annual event, held at the GCC university level, saw the participation of 150 students from 20 Gulf universities. The contestants showcased approximately 500 exceptional artistic pieces encompassing drawing, Arabic calligraphy, and photography.

Al Qasimia University initiated the "Artistic Radiances" competition to broaden the creative horizons of young talents across the GCC, with plans for further expansion on Arab and international stages in the years to come.

"This was not my first international participation. I previously participated in an international FIAP competition, and that was a good learning experience. While I wasn't successful in bringing an award home that time, I took it as a challenge to become better," he shared.

Having seen the work of other serious photographers, Al Ameri said he has decided to learn more and refine his craft. As he became better, he said he has ventured to join more local competitions to better understand the industry and also network among fellow photography enthusiasts.

"During my participation in the Al Qasimia University competition, I wasn't afraid. Unlike most participants who relied on mobile phones for photography, I utilized a camera. I feel strongly that my work was stronger compared to most entries I've seen," he shared.

Al Ameri shared he learned about his nomination through the head of the photography group at Sultan Qaboos University.

"The competition was very straightforward. I had a member of the photography team nominate me. There were three divisions: photography, drawing, and Arabic calligraphy. My entry was an architectural work that detailed the beauty of Oman craftsmanship," he shared.

"To enter the competition, certain basic requirements must be met. These include submitting entries through the university administration rather than individually, and participants must assert ownership of their works. Additionally, artworks must be appropriately framed and display-ready," Al Ameri said.

A specially chosen jury appointed by the organizing committee undertook the evaluation of the entries. Photography competitions typically assess technical skill, composition, creativity, and adherence to the theme.

Judges evaluate factors like lighting, focus, exposure, and post-processing techniques. Originality, emotional impact, storytelling, and innovation are often crucial.

Additionally, image quality, clarity, and coherence play significant roles. Some competitions also emphasize the photographer's ability to evoke feelings or provoke thoughts through their work. Overall, the balance between technical proficiency and artistic expression is key in determining winning entries.

Al Ameri said that for him, winning second place was a step in the right direction since competing in a GCC-wide competition prepares him for even bigger international competitions.

His Excellency Jamal Al Tarifi, President of Al Qasimia University, handed the winners of the “Artistic Radiances” competition. The President toured the accompanying art exhibition, lauding the creative originality evident in the pieces and the enriching artistic workshops. The display included various mediums such as Sharjah architecture, oil painting, and calligraphy, as well as an exhibition by Al Qasimia University graduate Yishuzhang from China.

Al Ameri mentioned that, along with a commemorative shield, the award also includes a financial prize of approximately 800 Omani riyals. He encourages all creatives and artists to persist, emphasizing that continuity is important.

"It's always a great pride to bring honour to Oman. I think for a lot of Omani photographers, we aim to showcase Oman's nature and architecture internationally by actively engaging in competitions, both domestic and international," he said.

Expressing gratitude, Al Ameri extends appreciation to the organizers, participants, and individuals at Al Qasimia University for their warm reception, cooperation, and the competition's success. He highlights that Al Qasimia University has generously covered all participant expenses.
